Vulture Control

How to identify vultures

Not many vulture species live in the Waldorf, MD area. But, you will occasionally see Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures. These scavengers, while both vultures, look very different. Turkey vultures especially can be easily mistaken for hawks. If you have vultures terrorizing your Waldorf home and yard, then identifying them makes their removal easier.

Turkey vultures are large birds. They are all black except for their bright red heads. The face of the turkey vulture will actually look like a wild turkey. The underside of their wings will be a silver color in the back and black in the front. This is the type of vulture that is most represented in Disney movies, so it will likely be familiar.

Black vultures are a similar size to a turkey vulture. However, they are all-black, including their head. They do not have a turkey-like face that distinguishes turkey vultures. When they are flying, you can tell a turkey vulture from its black wings with silver tips.

Why you might have vultures

All species of vulture are scavengers. So, if you see a vulture or two circling overhead, it likely means that there is something around that the bird would like to eat. They almost exclusively eat carrion. Dead animals and roadkill are some of the most likely reasons you see vulture near your Waldorf home.

A vulture actually has excellent senses, especially sight and smell. They can find the carrion they eat from a mile or more away. Their heightened senses actually work in your favor. Just because you see vultures near your home does not mean they live nearby. They may just be passing through the area to feed.

Reasons to treat your vulture problem immediately

Vultures are a fairly disgusting pest. They are very social and typically eat in groups. No one wants to watch a group of vultures feeding on roadkill. However, vultures are important to have around. They play an important role in Waldorf's ecosystem.

As already mentioned, if you see a vulture nearby, it does not mean that the vulture lives there. However, vultures become a pest when they do decide to move in. The vulture population is actually expanding around North America. While they are an important animal to have around, they can also cause a lot of problems.

You don't want a lot of vultures roosting near your Waldorf home. Their urine can break equipment. It is so acidic that it can even strip paint off walls and vehicles. Too many roosts can also cause electrical failures and break cell phone towers.

If you notice vultures roosting anywhere near your Waldorf home, contact Barefoot Pest Control immediately. Just as they can cause large systems failures, they can wreak havoc on a private residence. Our wildlife control technicians will come to assess the situation and help relocate the birds.

Don't let your vulture problem get out of hand. Contact Barefoot Pest Control today.
